Gallery Where presented Pocono Zhao Yu's solo project "DEAR MOM" at the West Bund Art & Design 2024. Zhao Yu's years of living experience in Paris have allowed her to continuously switch perspectives between Eastern and Western cultures as an "intruder," using various mediums such as images, installations, and writing to translate and explore the changes between these two civilizations. "DEAR MOM" follows Zhao Yu's consistent practice, aiming to depict a relationship of growth and breeding. Since the Middle Ages, the European concept of "Sun-Moon Doctrine" has held that the magisterium is represented by the sun, while the kingship is represented by the moon. Pocono Zhao Yu turns the entire space into gold color, a result of the sun's radiant glow.
Pocono Zhao Yu (b. 1991), currently lives and works in Shanghai and Paris. She graduated with a DNAP degree and a DNSAP degree from the National School of Fine Arts, Paris, France. Her work is primarily focused on transforming the perspective of "self-culture" into the "other-culture" viewpoint, juxtaposed within a deep spatiotemporal framework for reflection. She translates this through various mediums such as images, videos, writing, and installations. Drawing from personal encounters, she reconstructs scenes by borrowing elements from semiotics, literature, and related sociological disciplines, aiming to present the flow of civilizations and cultural transformations worldwide. A "new" narrator emerges, embodying the image of an "intruder" to question the truth of history, exploring and responding to the intricate connections between originals and copies...
